The right kayak can save your life

by Carl Natale on May 17, 2010

I hate to talk about the for two the kayakers missing in Casco Bay without all the details. But my column on buying a kayak was published in the Maine Sunday Telegram. Before I go further, the Coast Guard reports that they have been found. UPDATE: They were found alive floating in Casco Bay – […]

And the kayaks are wet

by Carl Natale on May 2, 2010

Elaine and I got the kayaks out Saturday for the first time this season and paddled a bit up the Nezinscot River. It was a wonderful way to celebrate May Day. We spotted a beaver, a turtle basking in the sun and several water fowl. The muscles didn’t complain. My strokes felt natural. My legs […]

What do you need to ride the Trek Across Maine?

by Carl Natale on May 2, 2010

Well you need to register and get the handbook. Yeah, there’s a handbook for all participants. Apparently it’s pretty comprehensive. So comprehensive that almost every question that I asked of Kathryn Libby, director of development for the Lung Association of Maine, she responded with, “That’s all in the handbook.” I was talking to her for  […]

I hoped he would avoid becoming a full-time knucklehead. But with reports of him being accused of hitting a woman with a glass in a […]

Rowing: Just for the shell of it

by Carl Natale on April 4, 2010

I wanted to find out about rowing for my last Ask an Outdoorsman column in the Maine Sunday Telegram. It was a very fun interview with Lorna Perry at Echo Rowing in Eliot. She had a lot of passion for the activity and what you get out of it. I always thought of rowing as […]

So now what

by Carl Natale on April 1, 2010

I knew Burley would wake me up early. His bladder didn’t care that I didn’t have to get up and start working anymore. All he knew was that it was time for him to eat and go outside. OK, I needed to get up anyway. Even if it was 6 a.m. It still was sleeping […]

Gone Away

by Carl Natale on March 19, 2010

March 31 will be my last day at MaineToday. I’m accepting a severance package that is part of a company-wide staff reduction. Several things are going on in my life that make this a good move for me. This gives me an opportunity to start a business.
