Sorry Yogi, you can’t use that drone to find picnic baskets

While I have no desire to disturb the somewhat peaceful nature of Acadia National Park, I’m bummed I won’t be able to fly drones in any national park.

Not exactly a crime against humanity. But the video and photography from a drone’s perspective could be stunning. I guess we will never know.

Unless the national parks want a promotional video.

And I’m sure exceptions could be made for search and rescue.

I was visiting St. Andrews in Scotland this summer, which is essentially a gigantic, beautiful graveyard/tourist-trap on the water. Despite the fact that it was crowded with visitors, there was a reverent quietness to the place, with only the sound of the wind and water imposing on the scene.

Until, of course, the guy with the GoPro showed up. For the next 1.5 hours, the air was filled the loud, monotonous drone of propeller blades cutting the air. It was the only thing anyone could hear. Honestly, had I found the operator, I would have pushed him off the nearest cliff into the tide.

So perhaps it’s really for the safety of drone operators that this ban has been put in place.
